The Model Archive (2017) portrays the model archive at the City Planning Department of Stockholm, and reflects on what it means to build a city. How do we organize our lives together? The model archive, located in the basement of Stadsbyggnadskontoret, is reminiscent of a chamber or container of both realised and unrealised visions. A location that possesses a potential, through retaining history but also its alternatives, through offering a ‘miniature Stockholm’ whose parts can be moved around. Thereby it functions as a projection surface and opens for associations. How would Stockholm have been like if other plans would have been applied? Which promises were not kept in the construction of the Swedish welfare state and ”People’s Home”? The image sequences are made up of slow trackings along the shelves of the archive, whose stacked models and cast miniature buildings function as a backdrop for the narrative. A constantly moving camera reveals the room bit by bit. In close-up, with an uncertainty of scale – is it a real city or a model that unfolds? We see layers of buildings and blocks stacked on shelves, in drawers and cupboards. Some are covered by plastic. The models are arranged according to area and neighbourhood, and marked with names that tell of their time. The film’s narrative departs from literature, research and interviews.

The video was commissioned by Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation, Stockholm, for the exhibition The Promise, 3 June – 3 September, 2017.

The following year it was developed into three channels and exhibited in a solo show at ArkDes – Sweden’s National Centre for Architecture and Design in Stockholm. It was presented together with models and shelf systems from The City Planning Department of Stockholm. Link to ArkDes’ archive.

The video is available for rent through Filmform – The Art film and Video Archive.
