It is the relationship that illuminates the being.
Gaston Bachelard, 1958

Such is our way of thinking – we find beauty not in the thing itself but in the patterns of shadows,
the light and the darkness, that one thing against another creates.
Jun’ichirō Tanizaki, 1933

In my new paintings, a continuation of Vikta blad (2024), I explore relations between light and darkness, colours and surfaces. The two-dimensional, superficial, meets the three-dimensional and spatial. Figuration and signification meet abstraction, resting in sensory impressions. For me, the paintings are tools for thinking, parts of a story, but also building blocks in a room. They relate to each other, but also to other materials and elements in the room; to architecture and movements of the body.

In the paintings I process photographs taken while travelling in Asia and Europe in the years before the pandemic. A recurring theme in my motifs is objects made of paper, textiles, branches and feathers: fragile materials that might disappear. The paintings become a way of taking care of and examining what I have seen; often in passing, through windscreens, shop windows and museum cabinets. The paintings are excerpts of the world, and of my own experience with it, that I would like to bring forward into a new narrative.
